Smart calendar-clock and remote monitoring win 2023 JAIN Challenge

A smart calendar-clock and data collection have taken the top prizes in the 2023 JAIN Challenge. The JAIN (Joint Artificial Intelligence Network) Challenge is a competition for developed technical products and services based on eHealth and artificial intelligence, which support the quality of life and self-reliance of people with dementia and their carers, and also reduces the workload for professionals and others who provide care.

BBrain Family calendar-clock supports from afar

BBrain is the winner in the Product category. The company makes calendar-clocks for older people and people with dementia which can be adapted to suit different needs. Because it can be controlled remotely, it is especially helpful in supporting loved ones and clients when it’s not possible to be physically present. The winning entry, BBrain Family, helps to include people living at home in the daily routine of others and focuses on a high level of convenience such as a smart clock that announces the time and part of the day. It also facilitates video calls, sends messages and photos, manages calendar appointments and sets reminders for meal times or taking medicine.

SVRZ focusses on data collection and action

Dutch care organisation, SVRZ (Stichting Voor Regionale Zorgverlening) provides care to three regions in Zeeland. It took the first prize in the Prototype category for its use of sensors to monitor clients. “Working with outcome information within shared decision-making” is the goal of their project, with movement indoors and the use of external doors as key parameters.

Vilans is a partner of the JAIN Foundation which works to enhance the well-being of people with dementia and memory problems as well as their family members and informal carers using artificial intelligence and smart technology applications. Each year, the Foundation invites healthcare professionals, students, organisations and others with a high social commitment and interest in using assistive technology to help people with dementia to submit their product or prototype for consideration.
